Social Media News – Week of 3/16

Posted on March 17, 2015

Twitter has recently purchased Periscope, a new live-streaming app.

Twitter has recently purchased Periscope, a new live-streaming app.

It’s that time of the week again! We’ve scoured the news for the latest updates to the top social media platforms so that we can compile them here for you to see. Check out what’s changing below:

Facebook

1. Facebook has recently partnered with DataSift. What does this mean for marketers? The social media platform will soon start explaining which users are talking about what, and what those users are saying about a variety of things. The new feature will give marketers a bevy of consumer insight, and will be great for social listening.

2. Speaking of partnerships and acquisitions, Facebook has just acquired TheFind, a popular commerce search app. TheFind uses multiple algorithms to bring consumers the best product suggestions possible. Keep an eye out for this feature on Facebook soon.

Twitter

1. Enjoy live-streaming? Then get excited for Twitter’s latest purchase: Periscope. The company is still in beta testing mode, so we will all have to wait and see how this new purchase works out for Twitter.

2. Twitter has a brand new analytics homepage, and it’s incredibly informative. While the old analytics page showed a breakdown of individual tweets, the new analytics page shows much more information, including: who your most popular new follower is at any time, your most successful response, your top media Tweet, and more. Twitter users need to check this out.

3. If you watch TV (and, let’s be honest, who doesn’t?) then you need to look into TV Timelines, Twitter’s latest experiment. This new feature recognizes when you are live-tweeting a show and offers to fill your timeline with other show-related Tweets, updates, pictures, videos, and more. We can’t wait to bust this one out during the next season of Game of Thrones!

YouTube

1. In a previous blog post, we mentioned that YouTube had begun introducing videos that allow the user to switch angles mid-video. It looks like this has been well-received, because the platform is now allowing users to upload their own 360-degree videos. We’re very interested to see how this will work with virtual reality devices.

So far, 2015 has brought about some very cool changes to social media. We’re excited to see how these new features and acquisitions will play out, and we’re looking forward to what’s to come. If you want to stay in the loop with the latest and greatest changes, check back in each week for our social media news blog!
